Navigating the Labyrinth of Consumerism

I couldn’t tell you the last time I found myself trapped in the labyrinth of consumerism known as the mall.  My dear husband wanted to go for a walk last night, and it was getting cold and dark so in all his infinite wisdom, thought it would be a great idea to go for a walk in the mall! Heck No! I despise the mall. The best part of any mall, besides Aunt Annie’s Pretzels, is the people-watching, my friend. It’s like a never-ending parade of fashion disasters and questionable life choices.

Let me be clear, I am not a shopaholic.  I find the idea of navigating through those massive department stores utterly overwhelming. Don’t get me wrong, I do have a soft spot for Macy’s, but only when I can shop from the comfort of my couch. I mean, who needs the hassle of dealing with crowds and long lines when you can shop online in your pajamas at any time of the day? Plus, with Amazon, I get that instant gratification of receiving my purchases super quickly, sometimes even on the same day! And let’s not forget the convenience of their easy returns. Just drop it off at Kohl’s, and you’re good to go. You even get a Kohl’s coupon!  And I may or may not have a slight addiction to using that coupon but hey, it’s always for the kids, right?

Reluctantly, I conceded and packed up the kiddos and went to the mall, but only under the condition that I could buy whatever I wanted.   To my surprise, my husband agreed.  But, as always, there was a catch. As we were walking in, he handed me some gift cards and said I could go wild, but only within their limits.  Was this a joke?  He knows there is no Hobby Lobby at the Mall!  But I snatched the Macy’s gift cards.

I couldn’t believe how many people were at the mall.  Am I that out of touch?  What do people even buy?   I just took my Macy’s gift cards and made a beeline for it.  I briefly glanced at the shoes, but ultimately ended up purchasing a Thanksgiving dress for my daughter. After that, we aimlessly wandered around for a bit, and then finally made our escape back home. And you know what? I came to the realization that I am still not a mall person. No amount of gift cards can change that!

Are you a mall person?  What do you buy?  Share your thoughts.
